O's Pie makes rare start, gets two hits

May 01, 2011|By Jeff Zrebiec, The Baltimore Sun

Orioles top prospect Manny Machado may be hitting his way out of the South Atlantic League. The shortstop, who was the third overall pick in last year's draft, provided Single-A Delmarva with its only runs Sunday with a two-run homer in the Shorebirds' 2-0 victory over Charleston. Machado also walked and stole a base in Delmarva's 10th straight win.

He's now hitting .337 with five homers and 20 RBIs. He's homered in five of his past seven games and he's 12-for-25 during that stretch with 12 RBIs.

The Orioles' third round pick from last year's draft, right-handed pitcher Dan Klein, will join Double-A Bowie Monday, Orioles director of player development John Stockstill confirmed. Klein, 22, went 0-1 with a 1.15 ERA in seven outings for Single-A Frederick, allowing two runs, nine hits and three walks while striking out 21 in 15 2/3 innings.

Matusz is scheduled to pitch two or three innings in an extended spring training game May 7. … Shortstop J.J. Hardy (strained left oblique) will take batting practice Monday and Tuesday, and is getting closer to going out on a rehab assignment. … Starter Jake Arrieta (right hip soreness) is feeling much better and remains on track to throw a bullpen session today and start Wednesday. … Former Oriole Kevin Millwood exercised his opt-out clause on his deal with the New York Yankees.
