Chubb processing center to close, cutting 90 jobs

The Chubb Corp. plans to close a Baltimore commercial insurance processing center in the fall, eliminating 90 jobs.

State regulators said Monday that the insurance company warned that the shutdown would come Oct. 31. When the company prepared to open the facility in Montgomery Park in 2006, officials said it would be twice the size of Chubb's other processing centers and employ more than 200.

"It did not turn out to be economically viable," said Mark Schussel, a spokesman for Chubb, which is based in New Jersey. "We will continue to maintain our presence through our branch operation in Baltimore, and we're hoping to the extent possible to be able to provide positions to the affected individuals elsewhere in Chubb."
