Poll: Obama chimpanzee e-mail -- Racist or not?

April 17, 2011|By Luke Broadwater

A Republican official in California is in hot water after she sent out an e-mail depicting President Barack Obama as a chimpanzee.

The e-mail shows Obama as a baby chimp with (apparently) his parent chimpanzees to his right. It then says: "Now you know why — No birth certificate!"

The Orange County Republican party chairman has asked the official, Marilyn Davenport, an elected member of the party's central committee, to resign, according to the Los Angeles Times.

But Davenport says she's staying put:

"I'm sorry if my email offended anyone, I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth," she wrote in an e-mailed response to criticism, The Times said. "In no way did I even consider the fact he's half black when I sent out the email. In fact, the thought never entered my mind until one or two other people tried to make this about race."

I guess it's possible Davenport wasn't thinking about race when she sent out this e-mail. It's possible her mind was completely clouded with birther conspiracy theories. Regardless, if she's so out of touch with reality that she couldn't see how picturing the country's first African-American president as a chimp could be considered racist, she should resign due to transparent stupidity.

I'd almost rather her say: "Yes, it's a racial joke. But sometimes racial humor is funny. 'The Chappelle Show' was full of offensive racial humor and it was the funniest show on television."

At least that would be honest.
