He was in trouble again in the sixth when Russell Martin dropped a leadoff single in front of a diving Scott and Derek Jeter hit a one-out single up the middle. Teixeira's bloop double made it a three-run game, and Rodriguez's sacrifice fly cut the Yankees' deficit to 5-3. However, Arrieta retired Cano to end the sixth and his night. He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out 20 and throwing 90 pitches over six innings.

Jason Berken came in for the seventh and allowed a run on Martin's groundout that cut the Orioles' lead to 5-4, but he stranded the potential tying run at second base by striking out Brett Gardner.

Jim Johnson allowed back-to-back two-out singles in the eighth before retiring Nick Swisher on a groundout, keeping the score at 5-4. The Orioles still needed three more outs, and they lost the lead before Gregg managed to get one.

"We were in a good spot to win it," said Arrieta, who authored a nice rebound start after he was knocked around for a career-high eight runs in his previous outing against the Texas Rangers. "They just kept battling, and they really got the best of us tonight. I think we're going to have a lot of games like that against these guys. Close games like that are fun to be a part of. Obviously, you want to come out on top, but we weren't able to do that tonight."
