The GOP agenda: Viagra for men, burqas for women

April 12, 2011

The recent congressional stalemate over the 2011 federal budget and Dan Rodricks' pointed commentary, "The right's obsession with abortion" (April 10), points up the Republican bent for sexual repression – aimed completely at women.

Denying access to family planning, abortion counseling and other services through intrusive federal legislation will only serve to limit women's right to make decisions about their own bodies. It is a sickeningly display of the arrogance and hypocrisy of the right's power base.

Meanwhile, advertisements for erectile-dysfunction pills for men – along with allowable medical deductions -- run rampant in the media.

Yet the stomach-wrenching hypocrisy of women's loss of personal freedoms while men are encouraged to indulge themselves falls on deaf ears among the promoters of this "righteous" battle.
