Tonight!: Kurt Vile's existential guitar tunes at Ottobar

Philadelphia-native is on tour supporting 'Smoke Ring For My Halo'

April 11, 2011|By Wesley Case

Philadelphia's most promising singer-songwriter in years comes armed with measured guitar licks and a head of hair that would make your girlfriend envious. Kurt Vile and the Violators play the Ottobar tonight, and it's a show worth your Monday night. Vile is touring in support of his well-received fourth LP, Smoke Ring For My Halo. His previous disc, 2009's Childish Prodigy, worked a tongue-in-cheek title but also hinted at the his talents; Smoke Ring makes good on that potential. For proof, here's the video for the Smoke Ring single "Jesus Fever." "I'd pack my suitcase with myself / but I'm already gone / Cleanse myself with vitamin health / But I'm already gone," Vile sings in the opening lines. The song evokes an open-ended departure of the soul, with the only certainty being the exit and nothing else. No, scratch that — Vile's guitar will almost certainly be there for the ride. Doors open at 8 p.m. $12.
