Listeria monocytogenes -- are you eating it?

You can find out by checking the Food and Drug Administration’s new food recall search engine launched early this week.

The Food Safety Modernization Act, signed into law in January, required the FDA to create a more consumer-friendly search engine that people could use to get the latest updates on recalls. The new version tells you the name of the product, the company and the problem. You can also click on an icon to see pictures of the labels.

“Recalls, mandatory or otherwise, are serious and we must do everything possible to make it easier for people to know about these recalls so they can take all appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families,” said Mike Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner for foods in a statement.
