Travel deals for spring

April 04, 2011|By Michelle Deal-Zimmerman

Let's start with the fine print: These deals have nothing to do with Opening Day. But with the sun shining and the O's back at Camden Yards on a beautiful spring afternoon, I couldn't resist. And you may not be able to resist some of these springtime travel savings:

-Save $15 off flights to Bermuda on AirTran. The airline begins flying from BWI to the Atlantic island at the end of this week. The savings $15 is available for travel through July 31. Must book by April 10. On the payment page, select 'discount coupons' and enter discount code: 2682 and certificate no: 00354d81803c2.

-Six Flags America celebrates April as "The Month of the Military Child" with $19 park admission for military members and their families. Beginning April 16, the park's opening day, through April 25, Six Flags will host ice cream socials for military families from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. at the Whistlestop Park area. (Wristbands required and are included with ticket purchase.) Discounted tickets must be purchased in advance from MWR/ITT offices at military installations in the Baltimore/Washington region - they are not available at the theme park ticket windows.

-The Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong has opened what is purportedly the world's tallest hotel. Of course, it helps that the lobby is on the 103rd floor. Rooms go from there is the 118th floor. The views are quite dramatic and you can see photos here. CheapOAir is offering flights from New York to Hong Kong starting at $810 round-trip. That's about the cost of one night at the Ritz.

-Expedia.com has introduced a loyalty program for its members. Expedia Rewards lets customers earn one to four points per dollar spent, regardless of which airline or hotel they book on Expedia.com. Travelers can redeem the points for flights and hotels - with the option of mixing and matching airlines and choosing from some 70,000 hotels. Membership is free.

-Book a Southwest Vacations package, including flight plus five-night stay at select Starwood Resorts (Sheraton, Westin), and save $100 off your reservation. Book by April 21 using code RESORTS100. Shorter stays also save: $80 on four nights, $60 on three nights.

-Red Roof - or should I say Red Whoof? - is offering a 15 percent discount to those traveling with pets throughout the month of April. The budget hotel is pet-friendly and welcomes pets at no additional charge. In addition to the discount, guests will receive special treats for their four-legged family members upon check-in.

-The Courtyard Columbia recently completed a nearly $2 million renovation, including a new "state-of-the-art" lobby and makeover of 140 guest rooms. There's also a new dining concept restaurant, the Bistro, hence the Bistro Package, which includes overnight accommodations, breakfast or dinner in the Bistro plus beverage. Package is $174 per night, Monday-Thursday, through July 1.

-Marriott is also offering up to 40 percent off select resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. The SPF40 deal is valid for travel through Sept. 30 when you book by April 30.

-With Southwest now flying daily from BWI to Charleston, S.C., a getaway to the South is easy to plan. The ultra elegant Planters Inn in Charleston, offers a springtime "Land & Sea" package that includes two nights, breakfast at the famed Peninsula Grill, a horse-drawn carriage tour, admission to the South Carolina Aquarium and a guided tour of Fort Sumter.
