Quint Kessenich: College lacrosse midseason report

March 31, 2011|By Quint Kessenich, The Baltimore Sun

Attendance: Frozen fans, no marketing, and pace-less games equal empty seats at college lacrosse games in February and March.

Maryland has sold just 14,546 tickets combined for six dates, averaging 2,424 in cavernous, 54,000-seat Byrd Stadium. Wouldn't everybody be better suited at Ludwig Field? Towson averages 2,351 fans, that's 102 more fans per game than Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays drew just 3,200 for last Saturday's spring break game against Virginia, a disappointing total for two marquee programs.

Administrators are hesitant to stagger game times, or play on Sundays. Coaches insist on adding mid-week games in the frigid months, ignoring the fans. Schools seem more eager to promote their summer camps than market tickets or enhance the gameday experience. Student apathy is a problem. Lacrosse remains a non-revenue sport with untapped potential.
