Retailers Kohl's Corp. and Wegmans Food Markets announced plans Tuesday to start hiring workers for new locations in Harford County that will create 1,800 jobs.
Kohl's plans to open a distribution center in July in Edgewood that will employ 1,200 workers by 2014. The facility on Trimble Road, which Kohl's purchased, will fulfill online orders. The department store operator anticipates employing more than 200 full- and part-time workers when the center opens, with hiring for hourly and management positions beginning this month.
Kohl's reported that its online revenue climbed more than 50 percent last year. The Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based company anticipates $1 billion in online sales in 2011.
Wegmans, a family-owned chain known for stressing service and offering gourmet fare, said Tuesday it would start recruiting full-time workers Friday for a 600-employee store set to open Sept. 18 in Abingdon.
The retailer announced plans in 2009 to open a new, 130,000-square-foot store at a site in Box Hill Square, near the intersection of Interstate 95 and Md. 924 just south of Bel Air. The grocer expects to have 150 full-time jobs and a total of 550 new hires. It plans to start hiring part-time employees in July.
Kohl's will have a total of 12 distribution centers across the United States with the addition of the Maryland facility. This will be its third distribution center focused on serving online customers, with other locations in San Bernardino, Calif., and Monroe, Ohio.
While Kohl's will initially occupy 602,000 square feet at the Maryland location, it plans to expand the facility to 1 million square feet by 2012.
"This new facility will ensure that Kohl's is able to accommodate the tremendous growth of our Kohls.com business," Ken Bonning, executive vice president of store planning and logistics, said in a statement.
Kohl's currently runs 1,097 stores in 49 states, including 20 stores in Maryland.
In its announcement Tuesday, Wegmans directed applicants to apply online, not at the store or by telephone. In addition to culinary jobs, Wegmans' full-time positions are for entry-level management, customer service representatives and cashiers.
"Full-time positions at Wegmans are about building careers," said Al Jackson, manager of the Abingdon store who last worked at the Hunt Valley Wegmans and started with the chain 22 years ago as an assistant deli manager in the Buffalo, N.Y., store.
The store will feature a large prepared-foods department that will offer seafood delivered daily and 300 varieties of cheese. The 77-store chain has branches in Maryland, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
In Maryland, Wegmans opened a store in Landover in October and plans to open a store in Frederick in June. Wegmans stores are also planned for Columbia, Crofton and Germantown, but no opening dates have been scheduled.
