Russell's big day locks up Laurel's winter riding title

Sheldon Russell clinched the riding title for the Laurel Park winter meeting with a five-win afternoon Thursday. The 23-year-old leads Forest Boyce (Garrison Forest) by 12 (43-31) with two days remaining in the meet. Russell, who also won the 2008 fall title, scored aboard Price Mambo ($27.60-first), Malibu Rock ($7.20-second), Dunraven Lad ($15.40-sixth), Dandy Waltz ($26.20) and Captain Twitch ($4). Russell also won five races at Laurel on Oct. 4, 2007, as an apprentice.

Roller derby: The Night Terrors and Junkyard Dolls will begin their seasons Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Du Burns Arena on South Ellwood Street. In the nightcap at approximately 8 p.m., the Charm City Roller Girls All-Stars (1-0) will face the visiting Detroit All-Stars. Baseball: Jayson Werth, the right fielder the Washington Nationals signed this offseason for $126 million over seven years, will bat second, manager Jim Riggleman said, according to a report in The Washington Post. Ian Desmond will likely lead off. … The Nationals optioned right-handed pitcher Craig Stammen and catcher Jesus Flores to Triple-A Syracuse.
