'Backpack Buddies'

Heritage Baptist Church will host a meeting for groups involved with a backpack program that provides food for children on weekends and school holidays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the church, 1740 Forest Drive in Annapolis. Information: 410.263.6680.

Earth Day

Event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. April 14 at Fort Meade's Burba Park. Visitors can enjoy food, games, nature walks and a farmers market. Directions and information: 301-677-9167.

Maryland Day

Historical and cultural institutions in Annapolis and southern Anne Arundel County are offering special tours, events and programming for $1 or less as part of the annual Maryland Day celebration through Sunday, March 27. Celebration also include historic sites not usually open to the public, programs developed for Maryland Day, costumed re-enactors, exhibits and family activities. Area businesses and restaurants are offering special packages and deals to commemorate the weekend. The Heritage Area of Annapolis, London Town and South County sponsors the event. A list of the weekend's activities is available at or at visitor centers and participating sites.

Caregivers conference

Family and professional caregivers, social workers, nurses and others can get information and access resources at the Caregivers' Conference being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 9, at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave. Free respite care is being offered by Active Day Center of Pasadena, 410-255-2879, and Active Day Center of Annapolis, 410-573-9100. Call by April 5 for reservations.

$10 registration fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch as well as materials. Social work continuing education units require an additional $10. Registration should be made by April 4. Summer internship program

The Maryland State Archives is accepting applications for its summer student intern program that is open to high school and undergraduate or graduate students attending Maryland schools or Maryland residents attending out-of-state schools. These are paid internships that include experience and training in archival records management, digital imaging and historical research methods.

The 10-week program runs from June 8 through Aug. 16. Qualifications for applicants include academic excellence, preferably with an interest in history, archival science, library science, computer science, American studies or related fields. The application process is competitive and details can be accessed on the organization's website at Applications must be postmarked on or before April 5. Applicants will be notified of decisions by April 29.

The Colonial Players' production of "Company," Stephen Sondheim's musical about life and love in Manhattan, runs through April 16, at 108 East St. in Annapolis. Golf tournament for Maryland Hall

Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts will host a best-ball-format golf tournament, "Chip In for the Arts," on April 28 at Compass Pointe Golf Course in Pasadena. Each player on the first-place team will receive a round of golf, a gift certificate to the Compass Pointe Pro Shop and a championship plaque. Prizes will also be awarded for second- and third-place finishes.

Rotary 5K run/walk

Registration is open for the April 9 "Moving Around the World" 5K Run and Walk sponsored by the Rotary Club of Annapolis and the Rotaract Club of Annapolis. Event will be held in Quiet Waters Park's Sassafras Pavilion off Hillsmere Drive in Annapolis. Advance registration is $25; $30 on day of event; free for children 12 and younger. Sign-in and race packet pickup is from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with runners beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the walkers. Advance registration must be made by Friday, April 1.
