Get wined and dined during Virginia Wine Week

They say wine gets better with age, and although Virginia Wine Week is only two years old, it is an event worth waiting for.

The event continues throughout this week and weekend, and celebrates "Love by the Glass," a statewide promotion that features fine wines and special tasting menus at participating restaurants and wine shops across the state. There are also travel packages for those who want to make it a spring getaway.

The plan: Virginia raises a glass to a week full of bottle popping and wine toasting. Pull up a chair and taste local cuisine and wines at one of more than 300 participating eateries. With more than 190 wineries statewide, guests will have the opportunity to take in a lot of local flavor.

Hotels in Lynchburg, Charlottesville and Richmond, among others, are offering packages that make it easy to prolong your trip and venture out to discover the wineries spread about Virginia's countryside. Many wineries will be releasing white wines from the previous harvest. This is a great time to try new, fresh flavors.

After cleansing your palate, join the local Daffodil Festival in Gloucester for all-day entertainment with storytellers, magicians, singers and bands. The festival runs Saturday (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sunday (noon-5 p.m.). Virginia will have another Daffodil Festival in Chincoteague the weekend of April 9 and 10.
