Sheahin's shot propels Loyola into 2nd round of WNIT

Sophomore guard Katie Sheahin hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left as Loyola defeated host Old Dominion, 67-65, in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Wednesday. The Greyhounds trailed by one coming out of their final timeout with 20 seconds remaining. Sheahin, who had a game-high 27 points on 11-for-18 from the field and a game-high nine rebounds, dribbled around a double team on the perimeter, then hit a fadeaway to put Loyola up 67-65. Lady Monarchs senior Jasmine Parker's shot with 3.1 seconds left bounced off the backboard. Loyola advances to the second round against the winner of tonight's Virginia-Morgan State game. Terps ride Kiene's home run to 10-5 victory over Liberty

Freshman designated hitter Tim Kiene's three-run homer in the sixth inning broke open a two-run game, and the Maryland baseball team used a season-high 14 hits to earn a 10-5 victory over visiting Liberty (9-9). Korey Wacker went 3-for-4 and was one of five players with multiple hits for the Terps (9-8).

More baseball: Towson hit seven batters with pitches in a 9-1 loss to visiting Marist (11-3). The Tigers fell to 4-11-1. … Eight players had hits as Navy (9-7-1) earned an 8-5 victory over Jacksonville State (11-5) in its final game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven.

Softball: Stony Brook senior Colleen Matthes (Institute of Notre Dame) was named America East Pitcher of the Week.

Tennis: The four-time defending champion Johns Hopkins men's and women's teams are picked to repeat in the Centennial Conference. … McDaniel freshman Brian Kron (North Carroll) was named Centennial Conference Men's Player of the Week. … Washington College junior Brittany Marshall was named Centennial Conference Women's Player of the Week. … Salisbury senior Angela Tenaglia (Reservoir) was named Capital Athletic Conference Women's Player of the Week.

Women's track and field: Johns Hopkins senior Christina Valerio was named an Indoor All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The USTFCCCA named the Blue Jays' Bobby Van Allen (Maryland) and Ryan Orner (Towson U.) Head and Assistant Coaches of the Year, respectively. … Salisbury junior Holly Defnet and freshman Kara Tolson (Patterson Mill) were named CAC Field and Co-Track Athlete of the Week.

Men's track and field: Hood sophomore Brett Shelley and Salisbury senior Brandon Lane were selected as the CAC Track Athlete and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively. … Bowie State sophomore William Bailey placed sixth in the long jump at the NCAA Division II Indoors. He leaped 7.40 meters in the preliminaries and 7.12 in the finals. Bulldogs junior Artavius Williams (Poly) placed 11th in the triple jump (14.13).

Women's golf: Morgan Koopman (McDonogh) shot a 93 to lead McDaniel to a second-place finish at the Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Shootout.

Peppi Knows takes allowance; Dunkelberger wins 3,500th

Two-time stakes winner Peppi Knows won the $41,000 allowance feature at Laurel Park. Under jockey Dana Whitney, the 4-year-old raced four wide into the stretch before driving by to win by 11/4 lengths in 1 minute, 10.84 seconds. Malibu Kid finished second, and Gattopardo was third.

Jockey: Travis Dunkelberger reached the 3,500-win plateau when he guided Lamuim to victory in Wednesday's fifth race. Dunkelberger, 33, ranks 97th all-time in victories and earnings ($50.4 million), according to Equibase.

Shiflett featured in United Boxers event in Millersville

Cruiserweight Russ "The Hammer" Shiflett (9-0-1, 5 knockouts) will headline the first United Boxers event April15 at the Maryland Sportsplex in Millersville. The card also includes three other undefeated fighters: welterweight Emmanuel "The Tranzformer" Taylor (10-0-0, 8 KOs) welterweight James "Keep 'em Sleepin" Stevenson (13-0-0, 10 KOs) and cruiserweight "Slick" Nick Kisner (7-0-0, 5 KOs).
