The 5-foot-9 junior forward became only the fifth player in the 39-year history of the girls' state basketball tournament to score 40 or more points in a single game. Her 40-point, 21-rebound performance in Saturday's 80-62 Class 1A title-game victory over Northern of Garrett County led the No. 4 Poets to the fifth state crown in school history. Wright, who averaged 21 points and eight rebounds going into the tournament, also had 26 points and eight rebounds in the 62-54 semifinal upset of then-No. 2 Joppatowne. An Amateur Athletic Union player with the Baltimore Cougars, she has scored more than 1,000 points. She is a B student and plans to play in college.
