A German national arrested in Mount Vernon for kidnapping his daughter in 2008 was charged Wednesday in the death of a California man who disappeared 26 years ago.

Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who briefly lived in Baltimore, now faces charges in the death of John Sohus, whose body was found buried in his backyard in 1994. The San Marino, Calif., man and his wife, Linda Sohus, disappeared 26 years ago. Her body has not been found.

Police said Gerhartsreiter rented a guest house from the Sohuses in the early 1980s, using the name Chichester. But in 1985, the couple disappeared, and soon after, Gerhartsreiter left.

Gerhartsreiter was living in Baltimore under the name Clark Rockefeller — and claimed to be a member of the famed family — when he was arrested and later convicted of kidnapping his daughter from a Boston street in 2009.

He now faces 26 years to life if convicted of murder.
