Gaithersburg, Calvert win girls state basketball titles

March 12, 2011

Gaithersburg polished off a 25-0 season by defeating Wise, 53-38, to win its first state championship.

The Trojans were led by junior forward Jackie Jackson's 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Last year, the Trojans lost the title game to Arundel, but the Montgomery County team made it all the way through this time thanks to Jackson's performance and the strong play of guards Kara and Colleen Marshall, who combined for 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Sarah Seipp, who had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Eliqua Brooks scored 22 for Wise (21-6) of Prince George's County.

Class 2A

Calvert 46, Middletown 37: The Cavaliers (25-2) won the first state basketball championship — girls or boys — in Calvert County history behind a balanced offense led by sophomore guard Alexis Smith with 14 points.

Rachel Loube had 13 points and Tiara Lester added 11 for Calvert, which defeated No. 8 Glenelg in the regional final and No. 11 Digital Harbor in Friday's state semifinal.

Kyler Redmond led Frederick County's Middletown (21-6) with 12 points.
