Fallston boys claim Class 3A-2A-1A state swimming championship

Cougars' Appel wins 100-yard butterly

COLLEGE PARK — — Fallston's boys swimming team set a goal this season to win back the state title they lost last year. Mission accomplished.

The Cougars had to sweat it out at the end, but edged Worcester County's Stephen Decatur 284 points to 282.5 to win their fourth title in five years at the Maryland State Class 3A-2A-1A championships.

"This is the result of a lot of hard work," said Cougars coach Derrick Jackson. "Our kids fought off injuries and other adversity to get back to this point. We always set our sights to do this, but I got awfully nervous at the end."

The Cougars only got one win in the finals — the 100-yard butterfly won by Austin Appel — but got enough points for the victory.

Madison Brown of the Fallston girls team (and Appel's cousin) won two races (the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard intermediate medley) to lead all local girls. Harford Tech's Brandon Caresta was the only local boy to win two races: the 200-yard intermediate medley and 100-yard backstroke.

"I was hoping for one, and I was really surprised when I won both," said Caresta, a junior. "I can't wait to come back next year and defend my titles."

Carley Nitchie, a senior at Bel Air, won her first state title in the 50 freestyle when she out-touched a swimmer from Easton in a very close race. She finished third in the same event last year. Nitchie was elated by the win.

"I knew I was swimming against the same girls as last year," Nitchie said. "When I touched the wall and I looked up [at the scoreboard], it was a great feeling."
