Jury to deliberate a fourth day in trial of man who stabbed wife

Jurors must decide whether killing outside courthouse was murder or manslaughter

February 24, 2011|By Tricia Bishop, The Baltimore Sun

Jurors will deliberate for a fourth day Friday in the trial of Cleaven L. Williams Jr., who is charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his pregnant wife outside a Baltimore courthouse in 2008.

Members indicated Wednesday that they were having trouble reaching a consensus. They sent a note to the judge late Thursday afternoon, but it's unclear what the document said. They asked to go home about 5 p.m.

Jurors are tasked with determining whether Williams committed manslaughter or murder when he attacked his wife of 10 years, shortly after she received a temporary restraining order against him. He says he was provoked into a rage, while prosecutors say he planned the killing.
