John Carroll's Malcolm McMillan and St. Frances' R.J. Williams share plenty of the same fine qualities on the basketball court.
Both are senior point guards headed to Division I college programs, and both like the ball in their hands when their teams need something positive to happen.
At the Baltimore Catholic League's awards banquet at Snyder's Restaurant on Monday night, the two standouts shared something else -- the podium, as they were named the co-BCL Players of the Year.
McMillan, headed for Central Connecticut State, has led the No. 2 Patriots to a 29-2 mark this season that includes Sunday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship, a 70-58 win over No. 7 St. Frances. He's averaging 16.1 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds and has helped the Patriots earn the top seed in the BCL tournament, set to begin Thursday with the quarterfinal round.
"It's a blessing to me," McMillan said. "There's been so many great players that have come through this league and won the Most Valuable Player, and to be one is just a blessing. I'm just going to continue to work hard."
Williams, a four-year starter set to play at Loyola University, averages 15.6 points and seven assists for the Panthers, who enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed with a 17-6 overall record.
"It's a great honor, and it shows that hard work pays off," Williams said. "I'm happy, but I'm not satisfied. I always know I can do better, and I'm still going to keep on working hard to make things happen."
Mount St. Joseph senior Brian Morton was chosen as the Mark Amatucci Defensive Player of the Year, and Calvert Hall's John Bauersfeld was named the O. Ray Mullis Coach of the Year in leading the Cardinals to a .500 season despite losing all five starters from last year's team.
