Keys to victory
The only time Archbishop Spalding won an IAAM basketball championship, it beat Seton Keough in 2002. The Gators won their last title in 2009 over St. Frances, which came back to beat the Cavaliers in last year's final, as the Panthers took their seventh title in eight years. This season, the Cavaliers, who have won 18 straight games and have not lost to a local team, swept both meetings with the Gators — 63-58 in double overtime and 49-36. In Thursday's semifinal, No. 13 St. Vincent Pallotti gave the Cavaliers trouble until three technical fouls helped Spalding boost a four-point lead to 19 in the final four minutes of the third quarter. In the other semifinal, the Gators used their hallmark defense to roll 54-33 over No. 4 McDonogh, a team they had split with during the regular season. The game plans for these two teams won't be much of a secret. The Cavaliers have the edge on the outside, especially in their floor leader Morrison, who had 19 points in the semifinal. The Gators have the inside strength in 6-foot Ade and 6-4 Brown, although the quickness of Spalding's 5-8 Curtis, 6-foot Swinson and 5-10 Calhoun can give the Gators problems. If the Cavaliers get hot from outside, the Gators could be in trouble. For the Gators to pull off the upset, they will have to dominate the paint.
