Werdesheim brothers are no heroes

February 18, 2011

I take exception to statements made by supporters of Avi and Eliyahu Werdesheim ("Protesters chant outside as Werdesheim brothers plead not guilty to beating black teen," Feb. 16). It's not "heroic" to confront a lone black teenager when the numbers are in your favor and there are no witnesses. In fact , it's somewhat cowardly.

While it's true we have a right to self defense, we don't have the right to assault someone we think may do the wrong thing because they're in your neighborhood. It's true, people should have the right to live in safe communities. But you don't have the right to take the law into your own hands.

I believe someone needs to counsel Eli Werdesheim that the special forces mentality doesn't apply to the streets of Northwest Baltimore. Let's just stick with America's rule of law, and call it a day.
