Maryland braces for ice storm

Freezing rain could persist into Wednesday

February 01, 2011|By Frank D. Roylance, The Baltimore Sun

"BGE is gearing up for the possibility of new storm-related outages, though this approaching weather system is not expected to have as significant an impact on electric service as last week's storm," said A. Christopher Burton, a senior vice president for BGE.

Even so, the utility said customers should be prepared for more extended waits for repairs this time.

"With freezing rain and ice forecasted for this storm," Burton said, "road conditions will be extremely hazardous, which would delay the arrival of restoration crews and extend outage durations."

"Now is the time to prepare," Gould said. Customers need to anticipate their medical needs, round up household supplies, flashlights and batteries, and keep BGE's outage line handy — 877 778-2222.

An earlier version misstated who is responsible for deciding whether University of Maryland, Baltimore, closes due to weather. Whether the university closes, opens late or ends the day early is ultimately up to the university's president. The Sun regrets the error.
