Maryland State Police have identified the tractor-trailer driver killed in a fiery crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 695 in the Towson area — shutting down lanes for hours — as 39-year-old Russell William Lewis of Baltimore.

Lewis, who lived in the 5100 block of Hilburn Ave., was hauling a load of calcium carbonate chalk on the north side of the Beltway's Inner Loop, just before the Providence Road exit, when his truck crashed into an empty minivan parked on the right shoulder of the roadway at about 4:30 a.m., according to police. The truck rolled into a sound wall, where it caused major damage, flipped, then caught fire.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. State troopers are investigating what caused Lewis to veer into the minivan and said they don't believe that alcohol or speed were a factor in the collision.

Lewis worked for a Baltimore builder and was taking the calcium carbonate from Pennsylvania to a plant in Baltimore.

The minivan driver legally parked and abandoned the car at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after running out of gas, police said.
