Ball in the Mall New Year's Eve celebration benefits the Columbia Association. Event will be held on both levels of The Mall in Columbia, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $100 per person and include dinner, dancing, open bar, disc jockey and live music and a midnight champagne toast. Tickets: columbiafoundation.org. $50 from the sale of tickets goes to the Columbia Foundation. Dress code is black tie optional.

Walking event The Freestate Happy Wanderers holds this event Friday and Saturday at the Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way in Columbia. Two-day event features a 6-km trail and two 10-km trails. Walking starts between 9 a.m. and noon and finish by 4 p.m. Take a can of nonperishable food for the food pantry. Senior Olympics The Maryland Senior Olympics' Winter Games take place Feb. 12 at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, 13800 Old Gunpowder Road. Featured sports will be ice hockey and curling.
