Shannon Ryan's Top 25

December 21, 2010|By Tribune Newspapers

There was more slipping in the rankings than on snowy Midwest expressways. Tennessee skidded farthest off track with consecutive inexplicable defeats to Oakland and Charlotte.

Records through Sunday (last week's ranking)

1. Duke 10-0 (1): The Blue Devils keep rolling even without injured point guard Kyrie Irving.

2. Ohio State 10-0 (2): The Buckeyes look like a team that could challenge Duke.

3. Kansas 10-0 (3): Talk about a stellar debut: Freshman Josh Selby scored 21 to beat USC.

4. Connecticut 8-0 (6): The Huskies had 12 days off but benefited from others' losses.

5. Syracuse 11-0 (7): Winning 11 straight to open the season isn't a big deal to the Orange. This is the 11th time under Jim Boeheim.

6. Pittsburgh 11-1 (8): Only one game remains (vs. American) before Big East play starts vs. UConn.

7. Villanova 9-1 (9): The Corey guards — Stokes and Fisher — average a combined 30.4 points.

8. Minnesota 10-1 (13): The Gophers are proving they have options without injured guard Al Nolen.

9. Georgetown 10-1 (14): The Hoyas will try to beat their second ranked foe Thursday vs. Memphis.

10. Missouri 10-1 (15): Add Phil Pressey to the Tigers' injury report.

11. San Diego State 12-0 (16): The Aztecs had no problem shooting down UC Santa Barbara, which had just beaten UNLV.

12. Michigan State 8-3 (12): Tom Izzo returns from his timeout in the corner.

13. Kansas State 9-2 (5): After tripping against Florida, the Wildcats need to regain their footing Tuesday against UNLV.

14. Kentucky 8-2 (19): John Calipari got ejected against Mississippi Valley State. Louisville fans wished it was permanent.

15. Notre Dame 10-1 (21): Call him Carleton "Can't Miss" Scott after the forward shot 8-for-8 against Stony Brook.

16. Baylor 7-1 (10): Gonzaga finally got the win it was looking for and handed the Bears their first loss.

17. Purdue 10-1 (22): JaJuan Johnson is looking more and more like the Boilermakers' go-to man.

18. Tennessee 7-2 (4): Jekyll, meet Hyde. The Vols lost two games to unranked midmajors.

19. Memphis 8-1 (11): Can the Tigers keep it up? Overtime victories over Austin Peay and Arkansas State indicate not.

20. Central Florida 10-0 (NR): Michael Jordan's son Marcus has the Knights on the rise.

21. Florida 8-2 (NR): Kenny Boynton broke out of a slump at the perfect time, scoring 15 to help upset Kansas State.

22. Texas A&M 10-1 (24): The Aggies needed OT to beat Arkansas.

23. Illinois 10-2 (17): The Illini don't have time to wallow. Missouri awaits Wednesday.

24. Texas 9-2 (NR): A victory against Michigan State would boost the Longhorns' profile.

25. BYU 10-1 (20): Committing 19 turnovers doomed the Cougars in a loss to UCLA.

Dropped out: Louisville (18), UNLV (23),

Temple (25).
