McDaniel College to offer math certification program

It's first in state for elementary specialists

McDaniel College will offer the state's first certificate for elementary school math specialists after receiving approval from the Maryland State Department of Education.

State officials praised McDaniel for taking the initiative to improve math instruction for students in kindergarten through the sixth grade. McDaniel professor Francis "Skip" Fennell, a former president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, oversaw creation of the program using a $400,000 grant from the nonprofit Brookhill Foundation.

McDaniel officials expect to award the first certificates late next year. "Given our country's need for students with a mathematics and science background and interest, this project is a first step in that direction, with multiple national implications," Fennell said.
