Still his trophy to lose

Newton continues to lead way, but holiday weekend matchups can make all the difference in final tally

November 22, 2010

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Buzz: The SEC's offensive statistical leader — first in total offense (303.2 ypg), rushing (117.9 ypg) and passing efficiency (183.6) — should be rested and ready for this week's Iron Bowl. Brushing aside the recent off-the-field noise, Newton could all but wrap up the Heisman with a stellar performance against Alabama.

Up next:

at Alabama, Friday.

LaMichael James, RB, Oregon

Buzz: Looking to recover from his first subpar performance last week against Cal — failing to crack the century mark for the first time this season — James will face possibly his biggest test against the Pac-10's best rushing defense. Arizona has allowed only two players to rush for over 100 yards: Cal's Shane Vereen (102) and USC's Marc Tyler (160).

Up next: vs. Arizona, Friday.

Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State

Buzz: It was an ominous beginning for the Broncos' signal caller. A fumble and an interception in the first quarter against Fresno State on Friday night could have spelled disaster. but the junior completed 27 of 38 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns to lead Boise State to a 51-0 rout.

Up next: at Nevada, Friday.

Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Buzz: After struggling against Arizona State — failing to throw a touchdown pass for the first time this season — Luck got back on track, completing 80 percent of his 20 passes for 235 yards and two TDs to dissect rival Cal 48-14. The highlight of the performance was a 58-yard scramble on which he lowered his shoulder to send Bears safety Sean Cattouse sprawling. Up next: vs. Oregon State, Saturday.

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State

Buzz: While having the best season of his three-year career in Columbus, Pryor has stepped up the last two weeks, rallying his team past Penn State and Iowa. The Buckeyes quarterback threw for 195 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another 78 yards to help Ohio State stay on track in the Big Ten title chase.

Up next: vs. Michigan, Saturday.
