Art exhibit

The Maryland Art League will host a mixed-media exhibit Thursday, Nov. 18, through Dec. 18 at Slayton House Gallery, 10400 Cross Fox Lane. The Maryland Art League is an organization of more than 60 artists working in a variety of media such as painting, photography, pottery, porcelain, sculpture, weaving, jewelry and stained glass. A reception will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Closed Sundays. Craft shop

Hickory Ridge Community Association is hosting a Holiday Craft Shop from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring in Columbia. There will be a variety of handcrafted items available. Free admission. Information: 410-730-7327.

Holiday event

Slayton House's annual "Breakfast and More with Santa" will be held Dec. 4 in the Wilde Lake Village Center in Columbia. Breakfast seating takes place at 8:30 a.m., and the lunch seating takes place at 11:30 a.m. Cartoons will be shown during both seatings, and each child will get a private visit and have a photo taken with Santa. Santa's elves will help children pick out inexpensive gifts for the family. Gift wrapping is free. Tickets are $5 per seat, and seating is limited. Around town

English conversation The central branch of the Howard County Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, offers "Let's Get Together: English Conversation Club." It's a chance for those for whom English is a second language to practice speaking and understanding English in a group setting. The club meets at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Wii club Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks offers a Wii club for those 55 and older from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. The first game is free. Information: 410-313-7213.
