Ask Outdoors Girl

November 06, 2010

Michael Thron of Olney asks: It has been a long time since I have hunted or even shot my 12-gauge shotgun (any free time outdoors lately has been devoted to piscatorial activities and endeavors). I would like to take it out sometime to shoot it, sight it in etc. What is the closest place to me or to someone in the Washington suburbs to do this legally and, hopefully, without a fee?

Outdoors Girl responds: A list of ranges and clubs and contact information is on the Department of Natural Resources website on the Wildlife and Heritage page under the heading, "Quick Links." Each organization has its own rules and schedules, so be sure to make a few calls before heading out. To get started, Associated Gun Clubs in Marriottsville — about 25 miles up the road — is having sight-in days today, Nov. 13 and 14 and Nov. 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experienced shooters and instructors will be on hand to help you knock the rust off your skills. The cost is $5 per gun and a $1 donation to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry. The address is 11518 Marriottsville Road. The phone is 410-461-8532.
