Frese's 2-year-old son Tyler being treated for leukemia
Maryland women's basketball coach Brenda Frese said her 2-year-old son Tyler was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is undergoing treatment at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, according to a report in The Diamondback, the student newspaper at the university. "As you can imagine, the initial reaction is pretty traumatic," Frese told reporters at the team's media day Tuesday. Her family's pediatrician diagnosed the disease immediately, which Frese said "pretty much saved his life that day." Tyler, who has a twin brother, Markus, is doing "extremely well," according to Frese. "It's a very curable battle that he will win," said Frese, who still plans to be with the team all season.

Washington College all-time scoring leader Scallion dies
Nicholas J. Scallion, Washington College's all-time leading scorer, died Tuesday night at his home in Hagerstown. "Nifty Nick," as he was known as a player from 1948 to 1952, scored 2,087 points during his four years with the Shoremen, earning All Mason-Dixon Conference honors each season. He had a career scoring average of 24.5 points and led his team to the Mason-Dixon Conference Tournament in 1950 and 1952. Scallion coached boys basketball at Crisfield and South Hagerstown, winning a state championship at each school. He also was a longtime high school basketball and volleyball official. Scallion was inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame's second induction class in 1982 and into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 for his coaching achievements at South Hagerstown.
Big East: Georgetown guard Austin Freeman was named Big East Preseason Player of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches. Syracuse freshman forward-center Fab Melo was chosen Preseason Rookie of the Year. Freeman, a three-year starter, was an All-Big East second-team pick last season after averaging 16.5 points and connecting on 52.5 percent of his field-goal attempts for the Hoyas, who were 23-11 overall and 10-8 in conference.

UMBC men top No. 23 Penn State on goal in 99th minute
Sophomore midfielder Milo Kapor scored on a 26-yard shot in the 99th minute, as visiting UMBC defeated 23rd-ranked Penn State, 2-1. Junior midfielder Andrew Bulls (McDonogh) gave the Retrievers a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, tapping in his own rebound after breaking in along from the midfield stripe. Penn State (8-5-1) tied the score on a goal by Corey Hertzog in the 77th minute, but UMBC (7-4-2) dominated the overtime period and cashed in with 1:11 to play. Freshman forward Pete Caringi III (Calvert Hall) controlled a ball around the 25-yard line and laid it back. Kapor dribbled and fired to the far right post and the ball hooked in just under the crossbar.
More men's soccer: Senior midfielder Stefan Froedert scored the winning goal in the 78th minute as host Towson (8-4-1, 2-4-1) ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Northeastern (4-6-3, 2-2-3) . The Huskies took the lead in the 22nd minute, and the Tigers tied the score in the 60th, when junior forward Liam Maloney converted a free kick from 24 yards. Froedert's goal, his first in college, came on a cross from sophomore midfielder Phil Martinelli (Marriotts Ridge).
Women's soccer: A pair of header goals just over three minutes apart lifted host Johns Hopkins (12-3), ranked No.22 in DivisionIII, to a 2-0 victory over No.18 College of New Jersey (12-2-1).

Women's volleyball: Johns Hopkins junior outside hitter Melissa Cole was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week.
Women's cross country: Frostburg State junior Anne Patron (Dulaney) was named Capital Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week.
Men's cross country: Salisbury senior Chris Barnard was selected as the CAC Athlete of the Week.
