After leading offensive explosion against Arkansas, Newton will have chance to take charge of the race

October 18, 2010

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Buzz: Newton guided the Tigers to one of the most impressive offensive displays in recent memory in the Southeastern Conference. The junior college transfer could earn a spot as a Heisman Trophy finalist with a strong performance against unbeaten LSU.

Up next: vs. LSU,

Saturday.

LaMichael James, RB, Oregon

Buzz: With Oregon's rise to No. 1 this week, the sophomore running back will see more national attention from the East Coast voters. Up next: vs. UCLA, Thursday.

Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State

Buzz: The national spotlight also will shine brighter on Moore with Boise State's run at a BCS title game. While some question the level of talent he's competed against, you can't argue with his 190.35 QB rating. Up next: vs. Louisiana Tech, Oct. 26.

Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan

Buzz: Once considered the clear-cut favorite, injuries and a two-game losing streak have dropped the sophomore back into the pack. He still ranks among the nation's top offensive players.

Up next: at Penn State, Oct. 30.

Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma

Buzz: The sophomore has quietly guided the unbeaten Sooners to a top-10 ranking. Can he join the ranks of Sam Bradford and Jason White as one of the

elite QBs in Oklahoma history?

Up next: at Missouri, Saturday.

Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas

Buzz: If you're looking at pure numbers, Mallett would be one of your guys even after he was knocked out of Arkansas' loss to Auburn. The junior has thrown for more than 2,200 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Up next: vs. Ole Miss, Saturday.

Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Buzz: As Stanford continues its run in the Pac-10, Luck will receive much more attention. He had Saturday off, but his previous effort against USC showed he's recovered from the Oregon loss. Up next: vs. Washington State, Saturday.

Honorable mention: Terrelle Pryor (Ohio State); Mark Ingram (Alabama); Bilal Powell (Louisville); Bryant Moniz (Hawaii).
