Recruiting class rated No. 25 in nation by Baseball America

The Maryland baseball team's 2010 recruiting class has been ranked as the 25th-best in the nation by Baseball America. Head coach Erik Bakich, recruiting coordinator Dan Burton and pitching coach Sean Kenny, who are entering their second season at Maryland, signed 22 newcomers to their first recruiting class. It is the first time Maryland's recruiting class has been ranked in Baseball America's top 25. "It's a tremendous boost for our program to be recognized by an organization like Baseball America," Bakich said. "Aaron Fitt and their staff do an outstanding job in covering and promoting college baseball every year. All the credit goes to our recruiting coordinator, Dan Burton, and pitching coach, Sean Kenny, whose efforts have been relentless in putting this class together." The class consists of 13 freshmen and nine junior-college transfers, as well as six players from Maryland. Two of the signees — freshman Tim Kiene and junior Chuck Ghysels — were selected in the 2010 major league draft but chose to attend Maryland over signing professional contracts. Maryland was one of three ACC schools included in the rankings. Georgia Tech came in at No. 7, while North Carolina was No. 13.

O'Donnell leads No. 2 Maryland past No. 19 Old Dominion, 7-5

The Maryland field hockey team (13-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), ranked No. 2 in the latest Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, topped host No. 19 Old Dominion (7-8, 4-1 Colonial Athletic Association), 7-5, on Friday. Senior Katie O'Donnell and sophomore Megan Frazer each scored twice in the win. With her two goals, O'Donnell needs just one goal to tie Maryland's career goals record of 85, set by Nicole Muracco last year. She is already the career points and assists leader for the Terps. Freshman Jill Witmer opened a three-goal run for the Terps in the 14th minute, when she scored off an assist by O'Donnell. Frazer scored 90 seconds later off a give-and-go from Witmer. Freshman Ali McEvoy gave Maryland a 5-2 lead in the 22nd minute off a penalty corner setup from O'Donnell and sophomore Harriet Tibble.

Women's soccer: Sarah Bennett scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute as Georgia State (11-3-2, 5-1-1) overcame an early deficit to earn a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over host Towson (6-7-3, 2-4-1). The Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when senior defender Samantha Young (Severna Park) took a pass from sophomore forward Cheyenne Skidmore (Liberty) and scored on a shot to the far post. But the Panthers answered in the 44th minute when sophomore midfielder Carly Lafferty tallied her first goal of the season. Tigers junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak (Atholton), who entered the game ranked second in the CAA in save percentage, made four saves for the Tigers, who have lost two of their past three games. … Sacred Heart (7-4-3, 3-1-1 Northeast Conference) scored with 33 seconds left to upend Mount St. Mary's, 2-1. Sadie Winship notched her second goal of the season off an assist from Andrea Bujacich for the Mount (3-9-3, 0-5-1). … Before Navy takes on Bucknell today at 11 a.m., there will be a free pancake breakfast. In addition, all fans who have tickets to the football team's game today against Southern Methodist will receive free admission. Having already concluded the road portion of the Patriot League schedule, the Mids will now finish the season with four straight home games. Navy and Bucknell are each 2-1 in league play and are vying to be one of the four teams to advance to the Patriot League tournament. … Jasmyne Spencer set a career high with five points on two goals and an assist to lead No. 4/6 Maryland (12-1-1, 4-1-1 ACC) to a 4-0 victory over visiting Clemson (5-9-0, 0-6-0) on Thursday night. Men's soccer: St. Francis (N.Y.) (4-5-2, 2-2-0 Northeast Conference) scored twice in the final 16 minutes to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 2-0, on Friday. The Mount fell to 5-8-0, 2-3-0. … Visiting Gettysburg (4-7-1, 3-2-1 Centennial Conference) scored three times in the final 30 minutes to pull away from host Washington en route to a 4-1 victory. The Shoremen (3-9-1, 0-5-1) got their goal when sophomore midfielder Justin Geho (Cardinal Gibbons) scored on a free kick at 56:02.
