Mountaineers shut down Bulls

Geno Smith outplayed counterpart B.J. Daniels, throwing for 219 yards and two touchdowns, as No. 25 West Virginia downed South Florida 20-6 in the Big East on Thursday.

Smith was efficient, completing 24 of 31 passes, while Daniels tossed three interceptions and threw for just 119 yards before being benched late in the fourth.

West Virginia (5-1, 1-0 Big East) won despite getting just 56 rushing yards on 23 carries from the combination of Noel Devine and Ryan Clarke. The Bulls fell to 3-3, 0-2.

• Mississippi's new mascot will be the Rebel Black Bear. More than 1,000 suggestions were reviewed by the school's Mascot Selection Committee, and 11 were submitted for public input at the end of June. The Black Bear received 62 percent of the vote, beating the Land Shark and Hotty Toddy. … Alabama and Michigan will open the 2012 season Sept. 1 at Cowboys Stadium. . … Indiana lost sophomore running back Darius Willis for the rest of the season due to a patellar tendon injury. Willis, will have surgery Oct. 20 to repair the damage.
