Terps' O'Donnell wins Sportswoman of Year Award
Senior Katie O'Donnell of the Maryland field hockey team was named the Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year award Tuesday night at the annual Salute to Women in Sports banquet at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. The Maryland coaching staff, the O'Donnell family and athletics director Kevin Anderson were all in attendance as O'Donnell was named the year's top performer for all team sport competitors. "What a wonderful honor to represent Maryland and the sport of field hockey," O'Donnell said. "I am so privileged to accept this award. I am extremely excited to take part in the Women's Sports Foundation from now on." O'Donnell, the 2009 Honda Sports Award winner, won the Sportswoman of the Year award for her accomplishments from August 2009 through July 2010. During that time period, she helped lead the Terrapins to their first 18-0 regular-season record and an Atlantic Coast Conference championship. She led the NCAA in assists and points and broke the ACC's career assist record. She is currently a starter for the U.S. senior national team. Over the last year, she played in more than 40 international games. Other nominees included former Terrapins lacrosse player Caitlyn McFadden, USA Softball star Jennie Finch, Olympic hockey gold medalist Meghan Agosta, and Betsey Armstrong, goalkeeper for the U.S. water polo team. "I was among some phenomenal athletes. I was star struck throughout the event and now I am one of them," O'Donnell said. "I want to send a big thank you to everyone who has gotten me to where I am today." Past winners of the award include Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor; basketball stars Sue Bird, Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi and Sheryl Swoopes; soccer star Mia Hamm; and tennis players Serena and Venus Williams.
Field hockey: A four-goal second half propelled visiting Stevenson past Frostburg State, 4-0. … Salisbury is ranked No. 5 nationally in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Men's soccer: Freshman Sunny Jane scored his first two collegiate goals as No. 4 Maryland topped Lehigh, 3-0, on the road Tuesday night. Jane, a key reserve midfielder for Maryland (8-2-1), got the game-winning score in the 40th minute after a slow offensive start for the Terps. … Stevenson junior Jeff Hohl (Century) scored his first career goal, and the host Mustangs (8-4-1, 1-3-1 Capital Athletic Conference) got an own goal in the 82nd minute as they battled Marymount (Va.) (5-7-2, 1-3-2) to a 2-2 tie in double overtime. … Loyola received a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference weekly award in every category this week as Phil Bannister took Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the third straight time, Jamie Libby won Defensive Player of the Week and Diego McQuestion (Gilman) earned his first Rookie of the Week award. The awards mark the third straight week at least two Loyola players have earned MAAC weekly awards and the fifth week the Greyhounds have taken at least one award since the MAAC began this season's awards six weeks ago. … Hood sophomore goalkeeper Will Lane was named the Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. … Salisbury (10-1-3, 4-1 Capital Athletic Conference) is ranked 18th in the latest NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Top 25 poll.
Women's soccer: Frostburg State sophomore forward Amanda Wharton (South Carroll) collected her third ECAC South Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award of the season.
Swimming and diving: Towson senior Meredith Budner (Walter Johnson) and junior Caroline Baker (Tuscarora) were named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. … Mount St. Mary's Cat Coppler and Courtney Griffith (Westminster) were named the Northeast Conference Swimmers of the Week.
Washington College: Freshman coxswain Chris Moylan (DeMatha) and freshman rowers Colin Mitchell, Jack McCarthy, Blake Weishaar and Dominic DiMarino share this week's Shoreman of the Week honor. Freshman volleyball player Lauren White (Huntingtown) was named Shorewoman of the Week.
Volleyball: Johns Hopkins (11-11, 4-2 Centennial Conference) swept visiting Franklin & Marshall, 3-0, to end a 13-match winning streak for the Diplomats (16-5, 5-1).
Squash: The Naval Academy Athletic Association and the Navy squash program will honor former Midshipmen squash coach Dave Brown in a ceremony before the annual Navy squash alumni match Oct. 30 at 8:30 a.m. Among the highlights of the program, Brown will have a court named in his honor and will serve as the coach of the alumni team. After taking over the coaching duties in 1981-1982, Brown directed the Midshipmen to a 267-117 record (.695) over the course of 17 seasons and helped mentor 22 All-Americans.
