Report: Nelson, Warriors to part

September 24, 2010

The Warriors will reportedly replace head coach Don Nelson with assistant Keith Smart with the move coming on Monday at the team's media day.

Several media sources reported the move Thursday. Nelson, who has one season and $6 million left on his contract with the team, will reportedly resign and agree to a settlement package.

It'll be the first big front office move for the Warriors under their new ownership group.

The 70-year-old Nelson is the NBA's all-time wins leader as a head coach. Over 31 seasons, including the last four with Golden State, he has compiled a 1,335-1,063 record.

The Warriors were a disappointing 26-56 last season, finishing with the third-worst record in the Western Conference.

•NBA Commissioner David Stern has advised Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards not to talk about the former All-Star's felony gun conviction. … Lakers center Andrew Bynum, coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, may not be able to play in any exhibition games, according to reports.
