Game day matchups: Ravens vs. Jets

September 13, 2010|By Mike Preston, The Baltimore Sun

Ravens WR Derrick Mason vs. Jets CB Darrelle Revis: Revis might be a little rusty after ending a 36-day holdout last week, but he still can play suffocating man coverage, which is a major staple of Jets defenses because they blitz so much. Mason is one of the best in the NFL at running routes. It will be interesting to see if the Jets have Revis follow Mason all over the field, or just have him staying on one corner full-time. Edge: Jets.

Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs vs Jets OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson: Suggs came into training camp in great shape, and played his best ball ever in a preseason. Suggs is trying to re-establish himself after a disappointing 2010 season, and he can do that right away against Ferguson, one of the better and more athletic left tackles in the NFL. Suggs has to learn to use his hands and arms better, but his first step will give Ferguson problems. Edge: Even.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez and C Nick Mangold vs Ravens LB's Ray Lewis and Jameel McClain: Sanchez worked hard during the offseason, but he still panics under pressure. Mangold and Sanchez will both be responsible for calling out the Ravens blitzes. The Ravens tried a lot of new blitzes during the offseason, and they'll get after Sanchez with Lewis and McClain. Edge: Ravens.
