Grant applications

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County will begin accepting applications for its Ladders to Success grant program Monday, Sept. 13. The foundation will make grants to nonprofit organizations that provide opportunities for disadvantaged or vulnerable residents to lead healthy and successful lives. Deadline is 4 p.m. Oct. 22. Raffle

Annual raffle conducted by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society is under way. Grand prize is $5,000; tickets will be sold at $5 each. The winning tickets will be drawn at the society's West River Heritage Day Oyster Festival at the Captain Salem Avery House Museum, 1418 EW Shady Side Road on Oct. 17. This is the 21st year for this event, and funds earned will be used for building maintenance, repairs and operating expenses. Tickets and information: 410-867-4486. Local merchants and society members will also have tickets for sale.

Heritage awards

Four Rivers seeks nominations for its annual heritage awards. These awards recognize individuals, organizations, partnerships, programs and products that contribute significantly to the community by interpreting, promoting, preserving, researching and supporting historical legacy. Nominations forms are available at fourriversheritage.org or by calling 410-222-1805. Deadline for nominations is Sept. 24.

Auditions

•The Children's Theatre of Annapolis will hold auditions from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, for its production of "Once Upon a Mattress," at 1661 Bay Head Road in Annapolis. Auditioners must be members of the Children's Theatre of Annapolis and should be prepared to sing, dance and read, They should also bring a recent photograph. •The Colonial Players of Annapolis will hold auditions at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, for ages 8 to 15 and at 7 p.m. for those 16 and older for its production of "A Christmas Carol," at 2132 Reynard Court. •The Anne Arundel Community College Theatre will hold auditions at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13 and Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Pascal Center for Performing Arts, 101 College Parkway in Arnold, for its fall production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." Singers needed

Encore Chorale, a choral program for singers 55 and older, seeks singers for its fall season at Anne Arundel Community College beginning Monday, Sept. 13. The chorale meets at 2 p.m. Mondays at the college, 101 College Parkway, Arnold. Singers improve their voices, make new acquaintances, and prepare to join Encore Chorales from Virginia, Maryland and Washington for holiday concerts. Information: 301-261-5747.

Police academy

The next session of the Citizen's Police Academy begins Oct. 4 at the Annapolis Police Department, 199 Taylor Ave. The program will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays for seven weeks. Resource guide

The Anne Arundel Volunteer Center has released its 2010-2011 Youth Resource Guide, which provides information about nonprofit and faith-based organizations in the county.
