Mount St. Joseph's football team proved its resilience Saturday, shutting out Bishop McNamara after giving up a kickoff-return touchdown in the first 15 seconds.

The Gaels played strong defense and took advantage of three Mustangs' turnovers as they opened their season with a 29-6 victory in the I-95 Kickoff Classic at Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium.

After winning the coin toss, the Gaels elected to receive which looked like a bad decision a few minutes later when Franklyn Williamson ran the kickoff back 89 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 Mustangs' lead.

"I think that woke us up a little," said Gaels coach Blake Henry. "We over-pursued on the first kickoff and they took it to our guys. These guys work so hard they're never going to quit. I was really proud of the response from them."

Less than seven minutes later, Gaels quarterback Craig Costabile polished off a seven-play drive with a seven-yard pass to Samuel Benjamin. Fletcher Sullivan provided the extra point for a 7-6 edge.

On the Mustang's next drive, Jacob Mooney recoverd a fumble on McNamara's 31-yard line, setting up the Gaels' second touchdown. Jeffrey Matthews Jr. ran 10 yards for the score with 3:22 to go in the opening quarter.

After that, it was all defense, with big performances from lineman Brandon Austin and cornerback Devonte Jones, and taking advantage of the Mustangs' mistakes, especially their trouble all game with snaps.

On the first drive of the second quarter, Javan Carter recovered a fumble and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown. With 7:57 to go until halftime, Thaddeus Moore recovered a fumble in the end zone and Sullivan added the kick to put the Gaels ahead 27-6.

"They run the same defense we do. It's an aggressive tackling defense," McNamara coach Bryce Bryant said. "You get your best athletes on the field and you let them cause havoc. They caused more havoc than we did."
