A 23-year-old Howard County police officer's marked patrol cruiser was involved in a three-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Route 32 north of Day Road that sent three people to area hospitals.
Police said Officer Jonathan Campbell, a two-year veteran of the force, was southbound just before 6 p.m. when his car hit a 2002 Ford van driven by Robert Keefer, 62, of Sykesville, who was also going south. The impact sent the van careening across the center line, where it hit a 1998 Chevy Tahoe heading north driven by Linda Cole, 57, also of Sykesville. Campbell, who was not on an emergency call, was flown by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was in stable condition. The other two drivers were taken to Howard County General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
