Girls cross country: Runners to watch

September 01, 2010|By Jeff Seidel, Special to The Baltimore Sun

Jo Baird

McDonogh, senior

She and classmate Madeline Dulac anchor an Eagles team that should make some noise in the IAAM this season. Baird took second in the conference title race last fall.

Samantha Bingaman

South Carroll, sophomore

She had a great freshman season, never finishing worse than eighth in any race. Bingaman capped it by taking fourth in the Class 2A state race.

Madeline Dulac

McDonogh, senior

Dulac had another great outdoor track season and will be one of the conference's top runners this fall. She finished fourth in the IAAM title race last year.

Ashley Hayes

Severna Park, junior

Hayes is coming off a great season in outdoor track and should help the Falcons have a shot at repeating as state champions. She finished 16th in the Class 4A state race last year and did even better in track.

Maura Linde

Century, senior

She's developed into arguably the best distance runner in the state. Linde won a Class 2A state title last year, helping carry Century to a team championship, and did more of the same in track.

Samantha McElroy

Liberty, senior

McElroy ran strongly in all of the big races last year. She finished third in the Class 2A state race, pushing Liberty to a fifth-place team finish.

Michelle Nelson

Severna Park, junior

She's coming into the fall after a very strong summer. Coach Ed Purpura said Nelson is going to be one of the top runners on an already deep Falcons team that's trying to repeat as state champion.

Megan Schott

North Harford, senior

Schott will try to improve upon a very good 2009 cross country season. She capped that year by taking second in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference championships and later getting third in the Class 3A state meet.

Elizabeth Tauber

John Carroll, senior

Can she win a third straight IAAM conference title this year? The other big question is if she can help the Patriots repeat as conference champs.

Leanne Young

River Hill, junior

Last year, Young finished fourth in the Class 3A state meet. She's already run well in preseason action this season, and the Hawks will need her.
