Police say Hutchins, with Carter in the front passenger seat, drove a 1994 Jeep Cherokee southbound on Brockbridge Road at a high rate of speed, left the roadway and headed in a straight line into a storage area of large trash trailers. The SUV struck one of the trash trailers, causing life-threatening injuries to both occupants.

Hutchins and Carter had been in a relationship for 15 years, police said.
