What to watch in the Ravens-Redskins preseason game

August 20, 2010|By Jamison Hensley, The Baltimore Sun

POSITION: Kicker. Even though Billy Cundiff had the better training camp, there's still a feeling around the team that Shayne Graham is the front-runner. It'll be interesting to see if this competition becomes clearer after the second preseason game.

VETERAN: Cornerback Fabian Washington. He will play his first game since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee nine months ago. Washington participated in nearly all of the practices at camp, but he was held out of the preseason opener as a precautionary measure.

ROOKIE: Wide receiver David Reed. The fifth-round pick hasn't been able to carry over a strong offseason into training camp. His dropped passes have dropped him below Demetrius Williams on the depth chart. Reed needs a strong showing to get back into the hunt for a roster spot.

ON THE BUBBLE: Linebacker Jason Phillips. The Ravens really like the 2009 fifth-round pick because he is always around the ball (his six tackles led the team in the preseason opener). But the quality depth at linebacker puts Phillips in a tough situation to make the team.

INJURY REPORT: OUT: OT Jared Gaither (back), OT Oniel Cousins ( headaches), C-G David Hale (bruised tailbone), G Daniel Sanders (left shoulder), OT Stefan Rodgers (partially dislocated right shoulder) and DB Marcus Paschal (right leg). QUESTIONABLE: TE Davon Drew (hamstring). PROBABLE: TE Ed Dickson (groin), WR Mark Clayton (ankle), ILB Tavares Gooden (neck), C Matt Birk (neck), FB Le'Ron McClain (back) and LB Prescott Burgess (headaches). Players on PUP: FS Ed Reed (hip), CB Lardarius Webb (knee), LB Brendon Ayanbadejo (quads) and RB Matt Lawrence (knee).
