Highlights from Ravens training camp

August 19, 2010|By Edward Lee, The Baltimore Sun

DOWNRIGHT FUNNY: The last strenuous day of training camp featured a generous amount of hilarity from the defense. The most humorous moment occurred when defensive tackle Kelly Gregg feigned a cramp in his left calf, flopping to the ground while linebacker/ defensive end Terrell Suggs motioned wildly for a trainer. Gregg shook his leg in the air before popping back on his feet and jogging to the sideline.

HOORAY FOR HAMLIN: Free safety Ken Hamlin wrapped up the final day of camp with two interceptions. His first interception occurred during a red-zone drill when he corralled a Joe Flacco pass intended for tight end Todd Heap that was tipped by strong safety Haruki Nakamura. Hamlin later picked off a Marc Bulger ball that sailed over wide receiver Justin Harper.

TIP DRILL: During a full-team exercise, wide receiver Donte' Stallworth caught a pass from Flacco by tapping the ball to himself despite tight coverage from cornerback Travis Fisher. During a 7-on-7 drill, wide receiver Eron Riley collected a 35-yard touchdown pass from Troy Smith after tipping it away from cornerback Doug Dutch.

WILLIAMS' WOES: Cary Williams did not enjoy one of his better days. Williams let a Flacco pass slip through his hands when wide receiver Demetrius Williams pulled up on a long route down the right sideline. Then the cornerback was flagged for pass interference when he pulled down Demetrius Williams, who was chasing down a long pass from Flacco.

BIGGEST HIT: Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and strong safety Dawan Landry engaged in a leaping shoulder bump. The 6-foot-4, 350-pound Ngata landed on his feet, but the 6-0, 210-pound Landry tumbled to the turf.

KICKING UPDATE: Billy Cundiff had one of his worst outings of camp, connecting on only two of five field-goal attempts. A 53-yarder strayed wide left, a 38-yarder wide right and a 52-yarder off the left upright. Shayne Graham was 4-for-6. Attempts from 49 and 50 yards sailed wide right.

INJURIES: Offensive tackles Jared Gaither (strained back/back spasms), Oniel Cousins (headache) and Stefan Rodgers (dislocated right shoulder), tight ends Ed Dickson (groin) and Davon Drew (hamstring), wide receiver Mark Clayton (ankle), center David Hale (bruised tailbone), safety Marcus Paschal (right leg) and guard Daniel Sanders (left shoulder) did not practice. Linebackers Tavares Gooden (neck tightness) and Prescott Burgess (unspecified), center Matt Birk (neck tightness) and fullback Le'Ron McClain (back tightness) returned to practice. Players who remain on the team's physically-unable-to-

perform list are free safety Ed Reed (hip), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quad) and running back Matt Lawrence (knee).

OVERHEARD: "Aww, cry me a river!" — Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg to tight end Heap, who tried to make his case to an official after he flagged Heap for moving early.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE: The walk-through is closed to the public and media. Training camp ends shortly after.
