Ocean City lagging on smoke-free trend

August 19, 2010

I completely agree with your take on making the beach and boardwalk in Ocean City smoke free ("A beach without the butts," Aug. 16). Were you aware that nine counties in Maryland have made their parks and recreation areas smoke free at the urging of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene? Yet the Ocean City Council members have been sitting on their hands, with the exception of Councilwoman Margaret Pillas.

Were you aware that over 100 beach resort cities have made their beaches smoke free? In addition, the state of Maine and Puerto Rico have made all their beaches smoke free.
