Highlights from Ravens training camp

August 18, 2010|By Edward Lee, The Baltimore Sun

CATCH OF THE DAY: Rookie wide receiver David Reed has had a quiet camp, but he earned a generous amount of applause during a 7-on-7 drill. Backup quarterback Troy Smith threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Reed, who outleaped cornerback Chris Hawkins for the ball in the back left corner of the end zone.

PENANCE FOR BARNES: A pass from Smith hit linebacker Antwan Barnes in the hands and fell to the turf. Barnes knocked out 10 pushups as punishment.

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO: Cornerbacks Fabian Washington and Chris Hawkins each deflected two passes. Washington broke up potential touchdown passes to wide receivers Demetrius Williams and Justin Harper. Hawkins knocked down long throws to Williams and Harper, too.

SUGGS SNAGS SACKS: Terrell Suggs finished with at least two sacks, taking down Marc Bulger and splitting a pair of sacks of Bulger with defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and linebacker Jarret Johnson.

FOOTBALL MORPHING INTO WRESTLING AND BASKETBALL: Quarterback Joe Flacco completed a throw to wide receiver Donte' Stallworth, who wrestled with cornerback Doug Dutch for the ball for several seconds. Defensive end Cory Redding called out to an official, "That's a jump ball!"

KICKING UPDATE: Billy Cundiff connected on four of five field-goal tries, succeeding from 19, 21, 40 and 51 yards. Shayne Graham went 3-for-4, converting from 19, 40 and 51 yards. Curiously, both kickers missed from 45 yards, Cundiff to the left and Graham to the right.

INJURIES: Offensive tackles Jared Gaither (strained back/back spasms) and Stefan Rodgers (dislocated right shoulder), centers Matt Birk (neck tightness) and David Hale (bruised tailbone), linebackers Tavares Gooden (neck tightness) and Prescott Burgess (unspecified), fullback Le'Ron McClain (back tightness), tight end Davon Drew (hamstring), safety Marcus Paschal (right leg) and guard Daniel Sanders (left shoulder) did not practice. Cornerback Chris Carr (left hamstring) and defensive tackle Brandon McKinney (swelling in right knee) participated in individual and positional drills, but were limited in other areas. Offensive tackle Oniel Cousins was carted off the field, and coach John Harbaugh said Cousins had developed a headache. Rookie tight end Ed Dickson left special teams practice in the afternoon early with the aid of a trainer. Wide receiver Mark Clayton attended the afternoon session, but did not participate. Players who remain on the team's physically-unable-to-perform list are free safety Ed Reed (hip), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quad) and running back Matt Lawrence (knee).

OVERHEARD: "Lol you have to love the NFL." -- rookie defensive tackle Arthur Jones, who announced via his Twitter account (Artj97) that the league fined him $5,000 for a low block applied during cornerback Cary Williams' interception return in the third quarter of the Ravens' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers last Thursday night.

NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE: Today's practice starts at 8:45 a.m. and could run between two and 21/2 hours. The afternoon session begins at 2 p.m. and could run two to 2 1/2 hours.
