DEFENSE LOOKS SHARP The day off from training camp clearly benefited the defense more than the offense. On the very first play of Monday morning's practice, fullback Le'Ron McClain fumbled, and defensive end Cory Redding pounced on the loose ball. The defense opened the first full-team exercise with free safety Ken Hamlin sacking quarterback Joe Flacco, linebacker Edgar Jones getting to Flacco two snaps later, and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe touching backup quarterback Marc Bulger four snaps later.
MORE D The only two interceptions of the morning occurred with Flacco at the helm. He overthrew tight end Todd Heap on an out, and the ball was caught by a sliding Tom Zbikowski. Jones intercepted Flacco, who was trying to find Heap in the end zone during a seven-on-seven drill.
FLACCO BOUNCES BACK It wasn't all bad news for Flacco, who threw touchdowns to Donte' Stallworth, Mark Clayton and Heap in three consecutive plays during seven-on-sevens. Flacco perfectly lofted a pass to Clayton between cornerback Brad Jones and strong safety Haruki Nakamura.
KRUGER BECOMES A NIGHTMARE Defensive end Paul Kruger took four consecutive snaps during a 1-on-1 pass-rushing drill and beat left tackle Michael Oher, left guard Ben Grubbs and center Chris Chester. Afterward, he was greeted by cheers from his defensive teammates and defensive end Trevor Pryce patted him on the back.
TEMPERS FLARE Linebacker Jameel McClain and right tackle Oniel Cousins got tangled up during a rushing exercise. McClain, a former boxer, got off a few right hooks to Cousins' facemask before teammates entered the fray.
KICKING UPDATE Monday was a perfect day for Billy Cundiff and Shayne Graham as both kickers converted all five of their field goals. Cundiff nailed attempts of 20, 38, 46, 52 and 58 yards, while Graham succeeded on 20, 38, 41, 46 and 52 yards.
INJURIES Center Matt Birk (unspecified), offensive tackle Jared Gaither (strained back/back spasms), defensive tackle Brandon McKinney (right knee swelling), tight end Davon Drew (unspecified), safety Marcus Paschal (right leg) and guard Daniel Sanders (left shoulder/arm) did not practice. Cornerback Travis Fisher, who did not practice Saturday afternoon for unspecified reasons, returned. Players who remain on the team's physically-unable-to-perform list are free safety Ed Reed (hip), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quad) and running back Matt Lawrence (knee).
OVERHEARD "You guys aren't serious with that play, are you?" -- Zbikowski to the offense after it ran a reverse with wide receiver Anquan Boldin taking a handoff from Flacco and giving it to Clayton. Wide receivers coach Jim Hostler quickly retorted, "Zibby, it's gotten guys a lot better than you."
NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE Today's lone practice starts at 2:45 p.m. and could run between 2 and 2 1/2 hours.
