Constitution protects all

August 16, 2010

In his letter in this morning's Sun ("Same sex marriage court ruling condemned"), Doug Hoffman decries federal judge Vaughn Walker's ruling overturning California's Proposition 8, expressing concern that the ruling "shows that Christianity has been overtaken by cultural norms." Putting aside the inconvenient truth that Jesus of Nazareth never took the trouble to address homosexuality, Mr. Hoffman should take some comfort from the fact the Constitution he fears has been "subverted by the judicial culture" (whatever that means) still manages to protect his right to congregate with like-minded bigots — safely cocooned from the apparently frightening notion of monogamy and commitment between loving individuals — just as it protects my right to pursue equality in a secular society.
