Coaching program

Howard Community College will hold free information sessions for its Professional Coaching Program from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, and 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 14, in the Kittleman Room of Mary Ellen Duncan Hall, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. Participants can learn more about the college's professional coaching program, explore career opportunities in coaching, observe a demonstration of coaching, and find out about fall classes and workshops. Auditions for the musical "Disco Inferno" will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, and Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Slayton House Theatre, 10400 Cross Fox Lane in Columbia. All roles are open, and callbacks will held Thursday, Aug. 12, if necessary. Interested persons should come to audition with 16 bars of an up-tempo song and a ballad and be prepared to dance and cold read from a script. Teen idol

The first round of auditions for the Teen Idol Competition begins at the Howard County Fair from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12. Other round one regional auditions will be announced later. Regional winners will compete in the finals in September. Information: 410-715-5523.

Columbia Orchestra auditions

The Columbia Orchestra, a volunteer adult community orchestra, has vacancies for all string instruments (permanent positions); and woodwinds, brass and percussion (substitutes). Advanced high school students are welcome to audition. Auditions for Columbia Pro Cantare

Columbia Pro Cantare is holding auditions for all parts for its 34th season. Works scheduled to be performed include Bach's "Singet dem Herrn," Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus and Regina Coeli, Barber's Agnus Dei and "Sure on this Shining Night," Handel's "Messiah," Dvorak's Mass in D and Janacek's "Our Father." Candidates forum

The League of Women Voters of Howard County will host a forum for candidates for the Board of Education running in the September primary. The forum will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the TV studio of the Howard County Public School System in the Application & Research Lab at 10920 Route 108, Ellicott City. Performing artist award

The Howard County Arts Council is accepting applications for its 2011 Rising Star Performing Artist Professional Development award. Competition is open to individual performers, ages 18-35, who live, train, work or perform regularly in Howard County or have done so in the past. Review criteria include artistic expression, technical ability and stage presence. Up to 10 finalists will be selected to perform at the council's gala celebration March 26. The audience of more than 500 artists, patrons, business and political representatives and community members will vote for their favorite performer; the winner receives a $5,000 award on stage. Art contest

The Howard County Bird Club is sponsoring a "Youth Bird Art Contest" for residents ages 9-13, to draw, paint or sculpt their favorite bird. Prizes include a backpack containing a pair of Eagle Optic binoculars, field guides and a year's membership to the bird club. Deadline for submissions is Sept. 1. Information:

Election judges needed

The Howard County Board of Elections needs registered voters to work as election judges throughout the county during the 2010 primary Sept. 14 and the general election Nov. 2. Registered Republicans are needed most, but Democratic judges are also needed. Information:


The Howard County Conservancy is seeking Wednesday drop-in gardening volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to noon to help maintain thematic and native plant gardens on the property. All levels of experience are welcome.

Also, drop-in work days in the Children's Garden, located within the Community Gardens, are 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the first and third Saturdays of the month, and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays. No experience needed. Meet at the Nature Center.

'Sunset Serenades'
