Notes from Thursday's practices in Westminster

August 05, 2010|By Edward Lee, The Baltimore Sun

DEFENSE ON POINT: For a good portion of Thursday's morning practice, the defense outplayed the offense. Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe sacked Joe Flacco on the first full-team play of the session, and cornerback Chris Carr sacked Flacco two plays later. The offense scored just twice in two red-zone drills, which were highlighted by rookie linebacker Albert McClellan's sack of Flacco and safety Marcus Paschal's interception of Flacco in the end zone.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Flacco overthrew rookie tight end Ed Dickson on third-and-16 at midfield, and the ball landed in the waiting hands of Tom Zbikowski. The free safety returned the turnover more than 60 yards for a touchdown and celebrated by attempting the extra point. With cornerback Chris Carr rushing the kick, Zbikowski shanked the attempt to the right.

NICE CATCH: Linebacker Edgar Jones got his hands on a pass thrown by Flacco, but wide receiver Mark Clayton tracked the ball and came down with the reception. Rookie running back Curtis Steele made a nice grab as he bobbled a pass from Troy Smith before hanging onto the ball.

KICKING WOES: Shayne Graham had the day off, but Billy Cundiff seemed to pick up whatever was affecting Graham on Wednesday, when Graham went 4-for-7. Cundiff missed three times in 11attempts Thursday, sandwiching an errant 43-yarder with kicks from 32 and 51 yards that sailed wide right.

DIVENS DELIVERS: Defensive tackle Lamar Divens made back-to-back plays, blowing up running back Jalen Parmele in the backfield for a loss and then batting down Smith's pass. The hip injury that sidelined Divens for the entire 2009 season appears to be a thing of the past.

BAD ENDING: The morning session came to a conclusion with Smith throwing a fade to Eron Riley in the back right corner of the end zone. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver was out-jumped by 5-11, 205-pound cornerback Doug Dutch.

INJURIES: Offensive tackle Oniel Cousins (throat) was activated off the team's physically-unable-to-perform list and practiced for the first time in camp. Cornerback K.J. Gerard (hamstring) and offensive tackle Tony Moll (concussion) did not participate. Players who remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list are free safety Ed Reed (hip), center Matt Birk (elbow), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quad) and running back Matt Lawrence (knee).

OVERHEARD: "That is our first-team defense getting their [butts] kicked. That is our second-team offensive line!" -- coach John Harbaugh to the entire defense after Steele twice rushed for a first down during a red-zone drill.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE: This morning's practice starts at 8:45 a.m. and could run between two and 21/2 hours. The afternoon session, which involves special teams, begins at 2 p.m. and is set to run about one hour.
